Featured artist – David Bruce
The trick to photography is to create an image that is – somehow – more than the sum of its parts; an image that is made better by putting a frame around it. David Bruce has learned the skill of marrying the optical science with the art of selecting parts of the landscape. This type of photography still attracts him, and the challenge of framing a shot never totally goes away.
David has an impressionistic style, creating one-off images using a variety of techniques, paying less attention to faithfully reproducing the real world and more to the feel of the final image itself. From tight framing choices to the layering of multiple images to create textural ‘tapestries’, this approach has opened up a whole new range of photographic notions and challenges.
David has had works in many exhibitions in Canberra and Western Australia. In 2009, he held a solo exhibition, entitled First Impressions, at the PhotoAccess Gallery in Manuka, ACT. His work has been sold through wineries, pearl farms, framing suppliers and mobile art galleries, among others. He also does work on commission, including weddings and events, commercial photography, and custom impressions and artistic images on location.
David has kindly donated one of his pictures, ‘Trick of the Light’, to be raffled at the Curtin Primary School Art Show.
